CEDAR ROSE GARDENS

gardensOur modest (for now) gardens were started in spring 2000. We built the store and house in 1999 on a veritable ‘sea’ of sand. The beautiful 38 acre parcel of land that the Cedar Rose is situated on remains much as we found it in 1999. The sandy soil provides excellent drainage but is very low in organic matter. The addition of peat moss, manure, compost and leaf mulch every spring and fall has slowly improved it’s quality. A rock wall of field stone collected from the property surrounds the store. We have been experimenting with different plants which will grow in this hot dry environment. It’s nice to see thyme, chocolate mint and even roses growing here. A split rail fence and cedar pole arch ways (also collected from the property), outline the gardens. These can be best described as informal cottage style gardens. A small water garden, a bog garden, a cutting garden and a mixed border can all be found here .
